Japanese media reported on September 18 that China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier had passed through the waters between Japan's Yonagumi and Iriomote islands. According to NHK, this marks the first time a Chinese aircraft carrier has entered Japan's contiguous zone.
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense also confirmed that a Chinese naval formation led by the Liaoning sailed through waters northeast of Taiwan today before continuing toward the southeast of Japan's Yonaguni Island.
Meanwhile, satellite images on September 17 showed that the Fujian aircraft carrier continued training exercises in the Bohai Sea, while the Shandong returned to its base in Sanya.

In a separate development, the Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group transited the Strait of Malacca and entered the South China Sea on September 17, following the completion of its deployment in the Middle East.
